Nick went to Chef school before this and wants everyone to think he is good at cooking but secretly is not.

Why I want to present at TrendsTalk 2012: 
Content Marketing is a trend that flies in the face of traditional marketing and ROI. It is community based and slow on the uptake. It is more abstract and takes longer to do, but ultimately it is something all brands should pursue in the online realm in some form. It will change shape over the next few years, and will likely develop several iterations, but there needs to be a starting point for average people (myself included,) and those who know about it can help guide its trajectory.

A New Face to Digital Marketing

If I say the phrase “digital marketing,” odds are that you would think of something corporate. The truth of the matter is that industries are changing and individuals are empowered in more ways than ever before. More employers are conducting online research of employment candidates, and everyone from artists to entrepreneurs are looking for ways to realize their goals. The way it is headed, small businesses, musicians, and graduates from all focuses can make their online presence yield the returns they need.


There are rules, methods, and tricks to taking control of your online presence. The reason, in general, that people spend so much time online is because they have control. Information is not received in a strictly linear way, and we can choose to ignore promotional material that we were blasted with before. We don’t want to change that, and neither should you. We don’t want to make the internet like TV.  We do, however, want to be informed users. If you own and rely on a car, you should know a little bit about how a car works.

This is a new realm we are all figuring out together, and it is a space that everyone is active in, from individuals to corporations, creators to spectators.  Freelancers and corporations occupy the same channels. You can’t outspend a popular person on Twitter, and you can’t do a hostile takeover of a website. In this sense, regular people can use business tactics while big brands are rushing to appeal to you on a human level. The crossover is getting stronger, and the students of the Integrated Marketing Communications program want to help equip an interested public with the tools with which to make their mark in this digital world.

The question is: what do you do, and how do you think owning your online brand could help?

TrendsTalk is an "unconference" where third year IMC students will be presenting seminars on new digital media at no cost to business owners, marcom industry folks, students, alumni and professors. This exciting event will be held December 5, 2012 at St. Lawrence College. It is a fairly new event, only in its second year. The 20 minute seminars will focus on mobile marketing, social media marketing, and interactive web marketing.

TrendsTalk is a completely student run event with a very limited budget. The primary source of funding for TrendsTalk is from corporate sponsors, such as you.
